How to choose

By your baby's age. Newborns without head control need a tub with a built-in support or a bath net. Once sitting is steady, a wider tub or a bath seat gives more room to splash.

Check the grip. The tub base, the seat surface and the bathroom floor all need traction — this is the single most important safety factor at bath time.

Look at the materials. BPA-free plastics, natural cotton towels, and washes with a pH suited to baby skin.

Consider your bathroom. Apartments do better with foldable or wall-hung tubs; larger spaces can take a standing tub so you're not bending over.

• Aim for water around 37°C — always check with a thermometer or your elbow before lowering your baby in.
• Lay out towel, clothes and a nappy within arm's reach before you start.
• Never step away, not even for a second, and not even with a bath seat in use. A seat helps you; it doesn't replace you.
• Rinse and fully dry tubs and toys after every use to prevent mould.
